Variation VI, for piano, in C minor

Ludwig van Beethoven, portrait by Joseph Karl Stieler

In order to celebrate Ludwig van Beethoven's 250th anniversary, here is a short piece for piano “in the style” of Beethoven.

Jean-Pierre Vial composed this piece in 2016, as a supplemental variation to Beethoven's Sonata Opus 26 No. 12. Beethoven had composed five variations for the first movement, “Andante con variazioni,” of that sonata.

This is the theme of Beethoven's variations (click the image to listen to the theme):

Beethoven's Sonata Opus 26 No. 12

Beethoven had dedicated his sonata to his great supporter, Fürst (Prince) Karl Alois von Lichnowsky-Woschütz. Jean-Pierre Vial dedicated his supplemental variation to pianist Stephen Porter.
