Christmas Carol

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

Merry Christmas to everyone

This piece is a “swinging” arrangement, for choir, organ and orchestra, of the Christmas carol “Let all mortal flesh keep silence” by Ralph Vaughan Williams (in 1906).

The tune is based on the French carol “Jésus-Christ s'habille en pauvre,” that probably dates back to the 17th century, reused in the French song  “Picardie” two centuries later (in 1848).

Besides the choir and organ, the required forces (instrumentation) comprise 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (Bb), 1 bassoon, 2 French horns (F), 2 trumpets (Bb or C), 1 trombone, 2 timpani (D and A), and strings.
